The Sea Wave
Project type
Paper Print with Two Sound Files
Date
June 2025
Location
Richard Hamilton Building, Oxford Brookes University
This work translates the sound of the sea meeting the shore into a pianola roll printout, an effort to controlling a force of nature that resists containment by placing this into a mechanical manmade system. Much of the wave's sound exists below 27.5Hz, the frequency of the lowest piano note, and is more felt than heard. These low-frequency vibrations play through the speakers, while the transcribed, piano-range segment can be experienced through the headphones. The Sea Wave reflects humanity’s impulse to document, translate, and tame the elemental—while reminding us of nature’s vastness beyond our grasp.
