The Song of the Humpback Whale
Project type
Prints on Paper
Date
June 2025
Location
Richard Hamilton Building, Oxford Brookes University
Why do we attempt to interpret the voices of these magnificent beings through the narrow lens of our own understanding, even as we pollute their oceans with plastic? This work features a pianola roll recording that captures only that portion of the whale's song audible within the range of a piano. It stands as a poignant metaphor for the limits of human perception—and a reminder of how much of their world remains unheard, unknown, and at risk.
Whales “sleepwalk” to be able to breath and swim while sleeping.
Materials
Wood, paper, ink, plastic (headphones, MP3 player)
